allowance calculator
(a simple utility to assist you)
Enter your data in the form and it will calculate the proper allowance
to use on standard task time. Do not confuse this with Takt
time! Hourly
output (task) is married with customer demand (Takt) to make production decisions. Often, systems employing
Lean
only use the "fixed" time and not the "random" time. Mathematically, there
is no difference; however, random interruptions are effected, to a slightly greater
amount than fixed interruptions, by group size,
crew rotation, automation, continuous process, floating staff plus many other factors
that are more prevalent in a Lean
environment. But just re-categorizing the values has no effect on the final
calculation and unfortunity this simple error occurs frequently. It is confusing to say the least.

Reset form to the default values, or use one of the other reset options to see how
the defaults would be calculated if the entire lost time was put into one category.
Select your option and engineer your standards based on your needs ... then you
can implement any system, such as Lean, with success.
Warning 1: This utility program will calculate the values
correctly. The most important thing is the time values and ratio values that
are used for the calculations. Proper study of these numbers should preceded
the use of this utility program. Need help? Ask us for assistance.
Warning 2: Often manufacturing companies just simply put
all the time into fixed loss and do not account for the fact that ALL lost production
time must be considered in aggregate. This is an extremely complicated area
and often requires much more study than it is usually given. Analysts, or
consultants, do not fully understand so they often ignore the importance of lost
time. The primary problem is generally individuals trying to make one solution
work for all. Or, unfortunately, they do not know so they make absurd statements
like "You never use allowances with Lean". This is not true. The truth
is, you need to evaluate your Task time and Takt time with accurate engineering
data--period. Accurate task information is crucial to any Lean system and
without it, failure is inevitable--but do not blame Lean, blame the implementation.
Do not just listen to anybody, only listen to those who have been in this exact
field of study since 1934.
